ARCHIVED EXHIBITION

Tuesday 28 October – Sunday 2 November 2013

We are thrilled to welcome to our galleries, for one week only, one of the great art treasures of Vietnam.

Gióng, by renowned artist Nguyễn Tư Nghiêm, has travelled from the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts in Hanoi to Cambridge, in celebration of 40 years of Diplomatic Relations between Vietnam and the UK. The painting will be on display in our gallery alongside other great works of art from across the world.

To launch this collaboration Dr Susan Bayly of the Division of Social Anthropology will present a special lecture, with a distinguished team from the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts, entitled Legend and Inspiration: Vietnamese National Art in the Modern Age. The lecture explores ongoing changes in the visual culture of Vietnam, and the trajectories of travel, entanglement and dialogue that have shaped Vietnam’s arenas of creativity and revived spirituality. The event is part of Cambridge Festival of Ideas.

Two million years of human history. One million artefacts. Countless astonishing stories.
