Accessibility at the CMC
Arrival
The step-free entrance to the CMC consists of a set of tall, black metal gates across the road and a smaller black metal doorway for visitors on the pavement to the right of the gates.
There are streetlamps by the front doors and bike racks.
If the road gates are closed upon arrival, please ring the button doorbell which is located on the right side of the doorway entrance, at waist-height.
If the main gates are open, please proceed to the front doors and ring the silver button bell to the right of the door, midway up the wall.
A member of staff will then greet you. Please keep in mind that the building is big, so it might take a couple of minutes for someone to let you in.
Step-free access
All main visitor areas including the Entrance Lobby, Cowles Workroom and Fell Store are located on the ground floor and have step-free access.
The O'Reilly Store is located on the first floor, which is only accessible via the stairs and does not currently have step-free access.
Folded chairs can be made available to visitors in the Entrance Lobby and Cowles Workroom.
Bathrooms
There is one gender-neutral accessible bathroom located on the ground floor. The cubicle has a sink and paper towels.
There is a second bathroom upstairs which does not have step-free access. There is an emergency alarm in both bathrooms.
Environment
There are no windows in the building, and the rooms are entirely lit by bright, artificial lights. The lights are typically kept on in visitor areas to provide suitable visibility for object handling.
There is no mobile reception inside the building. All visitors can connect to free Wi-fi inside.
The temperature inside the CMC can vary. Please bring seasonally appropriate clothing and an additional layer for comfort.
The air inside the building is dry and still.
Sound levels are typically low, but there is a low hum from the server in our Workroom. During your visit, there may be periodic loud sounds from alarms and intercom sounds.
Assistance dogs
Guide dogs, hearing dogs and any assistance dogs are welcome at the CMC. Please let us know in advance if you will be arriving with an assistance animal.
Hearing loop
There is a portable hearing loop in the workroom.
