Manos Creadoras (Creative Hands): Chilean arts and crafts

Friday 16 May, 5-9pm
Museums at Night
The museum is delighted to welcome three Chilean artists travelling to the UK for the first time. Join us for this special evening opening; drop in and talk to the artists who will be displaying their contemporary and indigenous artwork, enjoy traditional Chilean music and relax with a glass of wine whilst exploring the museum’s collections from South America.

Saturday 17 May, 11am-4pm
Our visiting Chilean artists will demonstrate their traditional weaving and jewellery-making techniques throughout the day. Take inspiration from their talent and join in with our family crafts and drop in activities.

The visiting artists are:
Marta Morrison
Marta makes jewellery from silver, wheat straw and wild oats.

Cecilia Challapa
Cecilia is a weaver who uses alpaca wool from the Andes.

Nelly Zurita
Nelly creates wearable art from dyed horsehair.

These events are taking place in association with Cambridge business Andes Crafts and the Chilean Embassy in London.

Andes Crafts was created in 2012 and aims to promote the unique arts and traditions of the Andes. The organisation recognises and promotes the skills of generations of women from remote Andean villages, home of ancient cultures and ethnicities; this diversity of cultures is reflected in their craft techniques, developed in perfect harmony with the environment and used to make beautiful and traditional garments and accessories.

Andes Crafts products are available from the MAA shop.
