Knowing West Papua: the art and politics of West Papua, (Indonesia) New Guinea

MAA is hosting an event to celebrate the art and cultures of West Papua. The event includes performances by Papuan musicians, the last chance to experience the exhibition, ‘Sounding Out the Morning Star: Music and West Papua’ and talks by artists, musicians and University of Cambridge researchers about West Papua. The day will also include the UK premier of ‘Knowing’ (48mins), a video project by artist, Alana Jelinek.

For Knowing, Alana invited groups of Dutch, Javanese and Papuan people to view collections of artefacts. Each was invited to talk about the artefacts of their own culture and from the cultures of others. Twenty two hours of footage was filmed. All the various stories and complexity of intertwined history been distilled into 48 minutes.
