Paleolithic hand axes are all-purpose tools, made by hand to fit into the hand: the Swiss army knives of our Stone Age ancestors, Homo erectus. These early hominids had bodies much like our own – they walked on two legs, were skilled in using their hands to knap flint and butcher animal carcasses, they travelled long distances and worked together in groups – but they did not have brains or language skills like ours.
