Through transplantation surgery, parts of bodies may be placed in other bodies, so that the body appears as an interchangeable entity that can be made from the parts of different people, animals and machines. The body can be harvested, added to and changed throughout our lives by grafting and transplanting ‘parts’. These exchanges establish new relationships between people. Sharing body parts between donors, recipients and their families, for instance, challenges traditional genealogical models of relatedness.
