Over 41,000 British soldiers were left with artificial limbs after World War 1. This model replaced an arm amputated below the elbow and had a uniquely firm grip, with the fingers opened and closed by a lever on the wrist. It was described in the press of the day as ‘the Almost Human Arm.’
