The Anatomy of Humane Bodies
William Cowper, 1698
Jesus College H.2.5 (c)
Cowper (c.1666 – 1709) was member of the Barbier-Surgeons and a Fellow of the Royal Society. This first major anatomical text produced in English was largely based on a Latin publication by Govard Bidloo in 1685 with plates drawn by Gérard de Lairesse and engraved by Abraham Blooteling. The pages of the seventieth table open here shows the muscles of the lower arm, hand and fingers as well as the instruments used for anatomical examination. As with Vesalius, many of the figures are shown posed in an Italianate landscape.
