Pacific perspectives

Taking a lead from present-day Pacific people, who assert strong ancestral interests in early voyage encounters and their artefacts, Artefacts of Encounter aims to generate new ways of thinking through these meetings and their aftermath.

Collaborative research partnerships already initiated with members of contemporary communities across Polynesia, including Project Partner Toi Hauiti will offer crucial insights into voyage artefacts as well as analytical inspiration.

For many Pacific people today, these early meetings and the objects collected by explorers now housed in the museums of Europe, are of great interest in their own projects of cultural, socio-economic and artistic revitalisation.
